Newsletter #8: April 19th, 2008 Leaving for B.C.!

"Every nook and cranny of our VW Jetta is crammed - our 18 foot canoe and 105 lb Alaskan Malamute top it all off. I wouldn't be surprised if the tailpipe is dragging on our way out to Penny, BC!"

Hello Everbody!

Since we pulled off the Fraser River for the winter on November 10, 2007, we've spent our time visiting family and friends, hunting, nursing a scratched cornea (not glamourous and not trip related), snowshoeing, cleaning and organizing gear, writing proposals, studying maps, researching this season's route, labelling trip photos and videos from last season, opening and closing the refrigerator door and marvelling at the genius of hot running water and gas stoves.

This year we'd like to make up time for last year's delay on the Nechako River due to flooding. Our route includes 300 km of upriver paddling on the Fraser to Tete Jaune Cache, portage to Valemount, Kinbasket Lake, portage over the Rockies to the Bow River, South Saskatchewan River, Lake Winnipeg, and various rivers and lakes leading us to Lake Superior. We'd be thrilled to make it into Northern Ontario this year. In fact, it will be a milestone to finally leave BC! No offense. B.C. is incredible - but it's held us captive for an entire season!

Every nook and cranny of our VW Jetta is crammed - our 18 foot canoe and 105 lb Alaskan Malamute top it all off. I wouldn't be surprised if the tailpipe is dragging on our way out to Penny, B.C.!

We've been told the river hasn't quite opened up yet, but it could any day now. We're ready. If not, we'll sit and stare at it until it's ready.

Have a great summer!

Pam, Geoff & Taq

Yes...those are snowflakes in the picture.
